The Sable Reach

The deep cluster the NV Dawnward opens in 2312. Everything in the reach reaches home through one throat, which is the whole shape of the trilogy: a region with a single door, a people living under a failing sun, and a road that gets wider every year. No shared coordinates with the home network — the reach is charted by topology, not by sky.

Routes are coloured by the book in which they are opened, used, or closed. The reach has exactly one way in and out; every crisis in the trilogy is downstream of that fact.

The lit, ledgered network the reach connects back to — everything the Dawnward is charting a road toward. The Span 012·000 The Sable Throat — The single door in and out of the reach, on the stable-space lip of the Span mouth. Geographically outside the reach; in control of all of it. The Sable Throat 053·000 Cairn Relay — The civilian authentication anchor commissioned out of the Span-control infrastructure at the mouth. It holds the route's provable state — and, in time, a great deal it was never built for. Cairn Relay 053·046 Seeded Nodes — The first authenticated marks in the reach. Until a ship goes and seeds nodes, a reach is simply dark on the ledger — no record, no provenance, nothing to check a claim against. Seeded Nodes 105·025 The Veray Systems — Held ground of a long-stranded human line whose sky is going out because of what the network did. The grievance is arithmetic, not misunderstanding. The Veray Systems 124·-47 Ostry — A heavy world under a reddening sun, settled five generations ago by the survivors of the colony ship Kindred. Its failing primary is the anomaly at the centre of the trilogy. Ostry 172·010 The Hearth — A dead, starless system on the far side of the reach. What is settled there in Book Two is a debt. Nothing about its origin is explained, and the crew do not ask twice. The Hearth 158·064 Unsurveyed — No node. No observer. No record. The blank on the chart is not a claim that nothing is there — it is a statement that nobody has been. Unsurveyed 222·-22 The Weir — The authenticated corridor cut around the Sable throat — the road that empties the throat and loads Corran. Named by Nora Vale in her own working, the way you name any ground that can kill the people who come after. The Weir 096·-40 Corran — The inhabited sky downstream of the Weir — the one the road loads and, in time, puts out. Named on the page from ch17 to the last chapter, and no one from Corran ever appears.
