How they speak
He works a problem out loud, gets the same answer twice, and stops. In chapter 3 that problem is how you would get a replacement mast leg to Sabben at all — the shop is two boats away and one of the two boats does not take freight. He does not complain and does not conclude. The arithmetic simply does not close and he lets it go.
