Keller's Field
by R. S. Breed
The farm looks ordinary. The numbers do not.
The ship is broken into islands. Sarah Bishop and the survivors can hear people they cannot reach. Air, water, heat and distance have become numbers with lives attached to them, and sometimes the only way to send a message is to strike steel until somebody answers from the other side.
Then they reach Keller's Field. It looks like a farming district: roads, barns, families, work waiting to be done. For a while, ordinary life is exactly what they need. But the measurements will not stay ordinary. Distance refuses to close. Clocks disagree. The day itself does not fit the instruments that arrived with them.
Sarah knows what bad measurements look like. She also knows what it means when independent measurements keep agreeing with each other instead of with the world everyone can see.
