Cruiser replacement — wartime new-build carrying a boundary instrument, a specialist and about eighty people. The books never name a class.

ISV Breakwater

A new Earth hull, four thousand tonnes of steel set going in June 2350 because a cruiser was gone and the fleet was short one — while Sarah Bishop was on a farm on the wrong side of everything with two hands that would not close. She was built to carry a measuring instrument, a specialist and about eighty people, and the eighty people were the point. Her arrangement is known through the second deck: a galley flat warm because the plant runs under it, a reference bank the size of a door, an after grid space with a standing instruction on it, two blank flanges either side of a wall, and a hand-sized plate riveted to a twisted frame that says when she was authorised.

THE GRID WALL — two blank flanges, one on each grid, six feet apart with a wall between them, waiting for a fitting on order since the spring of 2352 that never came. THE FRAME — half a millimetre out at the top and nothing at the bottom, twisted rather than open; four shims from one bar, cold, on a taper, in four hours. The plate is on its aft face. ⚠ SPOILER — SEPTEMBER 2353: where the outboard side came in on the second deck, about ninety feet forward of the shim join. THE ROTA — every Tuesday, on the after side of the mess bulkhead, on the flat between the two doors, on a strip of primer the yard never came back to paint. Grade of every figure on these sheets

  • published Stated in the books. If a drawing disagrees, the drawing is wrong.
  • derived Arithmetic on published facts; the working is given.
  • fixed Canon was silent here and the drawing decided.

Principal figures

Each figure carries its grade: published (the books state it), derived (arithmetic on what they state) or fixed (the sheet's own decision, bounded by what the books rule out).

  • Length overall

    220 m

    fixedspec ruling 2026-09-21 — §3.1

⚠ No length is stated. Bounded below: '*Havren* had been three hundred feet long. This ship was longer than that in one direction on one deck.' (Missing, Presumed, chapter 12). Scaled from ISV Palisade (265 m at 6,000–8,000 t) by the cube root of 4,000/7,000 t ≈ 0.83 → 220 m. She replaces a cruiser and is lighter than the one she replaces; the old 340 m 'capital hull' figure was the architecture's and is withdrawn.

  • Beam

    30 m

    fixedspec ruling 2026-09-21

  • Mass

    4000 t

  • Complement

    80 persons

publishedMissing, Presumed, chapter 13 ('Eighty people had come aboard over five weeks'); Missing, Presumed, chapter 38 ('built to carry a measuring instrument and a specialist and about eighty people')

'About eighty'. The sheet does not itemise them; where they sleep is never placed (see open).

What was checked

The books state distances aboard this ship. The drawing has to produce the same ones or it is wrong — so it is made to, and the working is shown. These run again on every build; a compartment moved by a metre fails them.

  • “The plate sits on the frame the acceptance stalled on, about two hundred feet forward of the after brow” Missing, Presumed, chapter 10 ('three decks up and about two hundred feet forward'); Missing, Presumed, chapter 11; Missing, Presumed, chapter 34; Missing, Presumed, chapter 44

    Brow at F212, frame at F151: 61 frames at 1000 mm = 61 m; two hundred feet is 61 m. 2-07 spans [151,158] on the frame's aft face. Pass.

  • “The shim join is about ninety feet aft of where the outboard side came in” Missing, Presumed, chapter 34

    Hit annotated at F124, join at F151: 27 frames at 1000 mm = 27 m; ninety feet is 27.4 m. Pass.

  • “Forward one carries about a hundred feet of passage” Missing, Presumed, chapter 34

    2-04 spans [116,146]: 30 frames at 1000 mm = 30 m; a hundred feet is 30.5 m. Pass.

  • “Two blank flanges six feet apart with a wall between them” Missing, Presumed, chapter 25

2-05 ends at the wall F146 and 2-06 begins there, both port. Flanges at F145 and F147: 2 frames at 1000 mm = 2 m; six feet is 1.8 m. Pass.

  • “The galley flat is on the second deck and the plant runs under it” Missing, Presumed, chapter 12; Missing, Presumed, chapter 29

    2-02 [96,112] on D2 (z 8.5); 3-03 plant [100,166] on D3 (z 5.5) — overlap F100–112 directly beneath. Pass.

  • “The cross-tie compartment is two decks below the bridge and on the second deck” Missing, Presumed, chapter 25 ('Two decks below the bridge'); Missing, Presumed, chapter 25 ('got down to the second deck')

BR → D1 → D2. 2-05 is on D2. Both quotes hold only with a first deck between, which is why D1 exists. Pass.

  • “The plant is aft of the mess, reached by the after door” The Last Manifest, chapter 4 ('went out through the forward door, which is the long way round to the plant')

2-03 forward door at F96, after door at F116; the after ladder 1-05/3-05 at [160,164] drops to 3-03 [100,166]. The forward door is the long way. Pass.

  • “One deck is longer than three hundred feet” Missing, Presumed, chapter 12 ('*Havren* had been three hundred feet long. This ship was longer than that in one direction on one deck')

    D2 runs [52,200]: 148 frames at 1000 mm = 148 m; three hundred feet is 91 m. Pass.

  • “Eighty aboard and four thousand tonnes are published; no casualty overlay is drawn” Missing, Presumed, chapter 13; Missing, Presumed, chapter 38; Missing, Presumed, chapter 11; Missing, Presumed, chapter 44

hull.mass 4000 t and hull.complement 80 carry the quotes. Deaths aboard (Bawa, Missing, Presumed, chapter 25; Attah, Missing, Presumed, chapter 34) are single losses in named compartments, flagged spoiler, not a zone table. Pass.

  • “Nothing on this sheet is proportioned from the 340 m capital hull of the 2026-08-31 ruling” §3.1 (2026-09-21)

Removed: eleven provision bands sourced to the architecture lock; 340 m / 46 m / 14,000 t; 'drawn larger than Palisade'. Every compartment now cites a chapter:line or is graded fixed and says so. Pass.
